Shippies to the locals, is situated in historic Battery Point and is a great old style, traditional Hobart hotel.

It was a very cheap $80 per night for a double room ($40 each) – double bed, with a single bed on top, providing great budget accommodation in Hobart.

Very neat, clean and with shared bathroom.

Absolutely fantastic value – one of the best, most authentic pubs in Australia.

The service from the Manager was excellent and no-nonsense, and they really looked after us.

It’s a stone’s throw from Salamanca Place where we went for dinner, and close to the main connecting roads.

Just perfect for those looking for top value accommodation. They also have nicer rooms with ensuites etc at a higher price. Well worth a look.

P.S: Went for dinner at the Shipwright Arms Hotel (“Shippies” to the locals) last night – superb value meals (and they’re great quality).  Their accommodation looks great value too.

If you’re looking for something to do in Hobart, here’s a great solution that keeps you active as well!

Hobart is a beautiful city surrounded by great places to go for a bike ride – a push bike ride not a motorbike ride! In saying that all of Tasmania is a great place for a ride because of the incredible scenery! Although sometimes it can be very hilly so I would only recommend some rides for really keen/fit cyclists!

Ian at Motoadventure – located down at Macquarie # 1 wharf (near Henry Jones Hotel) – hire brilliant electric bikes. These are silent and it’s like having someone push you up hills (you still pedal, just not that hard!).

If you’re riding around Tasmania and need somewhere to stay take a look at Tasmania Accommodation for a few ideas.

Now for all those cyclists who have messy garages and are struggling to find space to store them. We have the perfect solution! We use a bike lift to store all our bikes, it’s great!

Salamanca Market is the best market I have ever seen.  And Knopwoods Retreat is right there. Drop the boys and you are away!

You just have to time your visit to include a Saturday morning as that is the only time the market runs.

For the rest of the week Salamanca is a hive of activity with lots of little nooks and crannies just waiting to be explored …and the world’s best coffee shops.  And it is just a 5 minute walk from the heart of Hobart.

At the risk of appearing like a bloke who does nothing but drink beer (!), my first suggestion for a must do in Hobart, Tasmania is to have a beer or 3 at Knopwoods Retreat.

Knopwoods is a legendary bar in Salamanca Place that has been serving ales to sea-faring types since the convict days.

The bar has more history than just about anywhere,  Enjoy a pint or 2 of Cascade’s finest and move on to enjoy the rest of Hobart.

Ok Aaron, shut up and stop ya moaning!

Aaron, you see, owns Flippers the legendary Fish Punt in Constitution Dock.  He’s also my niece’s boyfriend/partner/whatever.

So he moans about not getting a mention here – well you’re here now Aaron!

Flippers serve fresh cooked seafood all day and some nights and you can’t visit Tassie without visiting Flippers – right near Mures restaurant, on Davey St…bloody great punt tied up on the dock.

The food is, all kidding aside, just great, cheap as chips (the chips are also cheap as chips!) and well worth a visit.  If Aaron is there, tell him he owes me one!

In a surprise to no-one ;o), one of the best holidays I’ve ever had was with a bunch of mates traveling around Tasmania on motorbikes.

We hired the bikes – new BMW’s and Honda’s, from Ian at the biggest (by far) and best motorcycle hire in Tasmania business – MotoAdventure.

Brilliant bikes, fantastic service (Ian is a top guy who just wants to make sure you see his much loved home state) and incredible scenery.

Care to see Hobart from another perspective? Well pick up a paddle and see the amazing waterfront as you float past historic ships, fishing boats, and learn about the city, the mountain, and the docks.

Pick up some fish & chips straight from one of the punts, without even getting out of your kayak. Your tour guide will provide all the instruction you need before taking you out to explore.

Be picked up and travel to the Cadbury Schweppes Chocolate Factory, sitting on a peninsula protruding into the Derwent River. Don’t forget to stock up on mouth-watering chocolates and sweets during your tour!
